Location
At an Animal sanctuary in MO during Christmas break.Time
It was at around 5PM in the evening, where this Lion just got up from an afternoon sleep.Lighting
Natural light golden hour. It was a bit cloudy, which is a very friendly lighting scenario for a photographer.Equipment
Handheld with a rented Nikon Z7 (trying out this new model at that time) and a zoom lens 28-300mm with a f-mount adapter. It is easy to shoot in manual with a mirrorless camera. I adjusted the correct exposure and white balance, I always love shooting manual and in RAW format to enable shots for post processing. As you may know, It is hard to capture what a human eye can see in the real world, but it is not impossible I think :).Inspiration
I was shooting a lot of wildlife during this time. I was just 2 years into photography, still learning a lot of techniques. I found this Lion in a very close proximity with a moderate fence to zoom in, easy to get the perfect front facing shot! and this creature was not aggressive, just got up from sleep. I captured a tiger face before I took this one, I was experimenting the same shot with the Lion, and voilà! I got this.Editing
A little cropping and a very little lightroom adjustments to make the frame look balanced, but the Lion was perfectly front facing towards the camera. In my camera bag
I keep a sports body (to shoot action) and also a mirrorless full frame body. I use combination of prime and zoom lenses. For macro shots I use manual focus prime lenses, I like the IRIX 150mm macro from this range. For nature, I use a 14-30mm zoom lens, There are a wide variety of options available in the market today, choose the one that suits your budget and situation. For wildlife, I use an adapter with a moderate zoom lens within a moderate budget. Photography is an expensive affair, faster lenses are a way expensive .. but if you prefer shooting on a tripod, which I think you should, you can go for cheaper options to save some money.Feedback
These kind of shots are a bit hard to capture because the animals are constantly moving. I captured a Tiger shot with a 500MM zoom lens (handheld), and my shoulder was hurting really bad, but I got the shot I was looking for at the end. I nearly spent 60 mins on that one. This one was a bit easier because the animal was in a resting posture. Always try hard until you get what you want on the frame, you have to dedicate the time to capture good shots, but you can do it. It is a pleasure sharing my experience here, All the best in your photography!
