Location
This photo was created on a moody and foggy day in Sica Hollow State Park in the northeast corner of South Dakota. The native Lakota Sioux Tribe believes this area is haunted, and there are many dark and mysterious legends surrounding the park and it's surrounding hollow.Time
I made this photo just before noon. The foggy atmosphere provided an environment that allowed me to shoot much later into the day than I would normally. At times throughout the day, the sun would attempt to break through the fog, providing a beautiful glowy light for photography. As I walked down this dark path, it was a magical vision to see this glowy light through the trees dressed in fall colors.Lighting
I love photographing on foggy days. This particular day I was exploring in Sica Hollow State Park and was mesmerized by this trail. The hazy atmosphere along this long tunnel was a scene that made me catch my breath. This beautiful light began to break through the fog as I framed this composition. I loved how the light came from the end of the tunnel, and how the foreground branches and trees framed this diffused light.Equipment
Nikon D850 with a 70-200 lens on a tripod. I liked how the longer lens compressed the scene.Inspiration
Foggy days are magical, and I enjoy capturing the essence of a foggy day in a photograph. I saw this foggy path as I explored the Park and stopped dead in my tracks and knew I had to take a photo of this beautiful setting. The bowing of trees over this leaf-strewn path created an enchanting archway, drawing the eye into the center of the image. The trail disappeared into the fog, and that created a mystery and a sense of depth in the photo.Editing
I used photoshop to enhance the vibrancy of the colors in this photo and added a vignette as a natural frame and to help draw the viewer's eye down the tunnel. In my camera bag
I have two camera bodies in my bag: the Nikon D850 for landscape, and the Nikon D500 for wildlife. I have lenses that cover a wide range: the Tamron 15-30, the Tamron 24-70, and the Nikon 70-200. I can use any of these lenses to create a photo that best tells the story I have envisioned. I also carry a polarizer and 3,6, and 10 stop neutral density filters, as well as a shutter release. Most of my landscape shots are created on a tripod.Feedback
Fall colors in the fog can be a wonderful combination in photography. Using a circular polarizer can help cut down on glare and can also bring out the vibrance in the color of the leaves. Often, your settings will include slow shutter speed, so using a tripod can be beneficial.
