Location
This pic was taken in the coffee shop area at the Museum of the Appalachia in Norris Tennessee.Time
It was taken probably around mid-day.Lighting
It was shot with available lighting. I didn't want to use the camera's flash, so the lighting comes from outdoor light streaming through the cafe's windowsEquipment
A Kodak Z740 digital camera. (this was 2006) My second digital camera, which took remarkably good pictures. No flash, no tripod, strictly handheldInspiration
Robert Pelton was an author who wrote numerous books, all non-fiction. He was also a teacher to me, a mentor and a friend. I met him in 1971 when he was teaching a writing class in So California. We became good friends, and we were in contact up to a few months before he died in 2021. I was just playing around with the camera taking candid shots of him as we talked. Of the dozen or so pictures I took this is the one he and I liked best. You always hope you'll get a prize winning picture but I didn't expect this picture to show up so many places. He used it on his website, as an author's picture on the back of his books, and sadly it was used in his obituary materials.Editing
This is the way the picture came out of the camera. In my camera bag
My equipment has changed a lot since this picture was taken. I typically have a Nikon 5200 camera body, a Tamron 18-400 zoom lens, a 35mm lens, extra batteries and SD cards, an electronic flash a remote shutter release, a small flashlight and various other photography related items.Feedback
Take a lot of shots, not just one or two, doing so you have a better chance of getting just the right expression and exposure.
