Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken overlooking the water outside Mission Point Lighthouse in Traverse City, MI. Every summer we travel to Traverse City to visit family. Every year we take a family photo with us on the beach and the lighthouse behind us. Usually we spend some time afterward walking the beach, skipping rocks in the water, or walking to a small playground a few yards down the beach.

Time

This photo was taken around 5pm.

Lighting

That day the wind and clouds were rolling in off the water. The large clouds would occasionally break and were letting large rays of sunlight break through.

Equipment

Nikon D7100, Tamron 17-50 2.8 lens, handheld

Inspiration

Every summer we travel to Traverse City to visit family. Every year we take a family photo with us on the beach and the lighthouse behind us. Usually we spend some time afterward walking the beach, skipping rocks in the water, or walking to a small playground a few yards down the beach. Every year the beach looks a little different the weather is always changing.

Editing

I post-processed in Lightroom - corrected white balance, adjusted for highlights and shadows, sharpened the image, and color corrected the image to what I thought looked nice.

In my camera bag

I now primarily work with a Nikon D850 and carry a 70-200mm zoom lens and 35mm and 50mm prime lenses. I don't often carry all three lenses at the same time unless I really am not sure what I'm going to photograph that day. Lots of times, if I'm going into woods for a hike I'll take either my 35 or 70-200 - depends on whether or not I'm shooting people or scenery. Sometimes I enjoy taking one lens with me, especially if it's a prime lens, and having to use my foot to move around rather than relying on a zoom lens. One advantage of shooting RAW on the the Nikon D850 is having many pixels to work with which makes cropping a lot easier when necessary.

Feedback

Be patient and watch the clouds. Do your best to anticipate where the break in the clouds will come so that you will be ready. This photo was taken a few years ago before I had done much experimenting with bracketing. If I was taking this photo now, I probably would set my camera to take 5-7 pictures all at different exposures so that I could combine those images in Lightroom or Photoshop. This could have provided even more of a dynamic range with even better highs and lows.
