Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Orana Wildlife park in Christchurch, New Zealand

Time

Spotted the tiger about mid morning just soaking up the sun watching the humans

Lighting

It was a somewhat over cast day with nice even lighting. I was trying to capture the intensity of his stare, he seemed just as interested in what I was uptown as I was with him

Equipment

The image was shot hand held Canon 6D mark 2 Tamron 150-600 @ 600 iso 800 F/6.3 @1/640

Inspiration

Lately I have been following the work of David Yarrow, I love his Black and White wildlife work. to that end I've been experimenting with Black and white, trying to capture uncluttered images, focussing more on the subject at hand

Editing

The original image was shot in colour, covered it to B&W, adjusting contrast a little, also blurred out the background a little to draw more attention to the subject

In my camera bag

Usually have a Canon 6D mark 2, Canon 50mm 1.8, Canon 24-105 which is pretty much my workhorse lens, and a Canon speed light for fill light If I going somewhere that there might be a chance of wildlife I'll pack my Tamron 150- 600, and a Canon 7D for extra reach, of course the tripod is always in the back of the car

Feedback

Patience, try to slow down the whole process and try to picture the final image you have in mind before pressing the shutter release ( not always possible with wildlife ) Don't be afraid to try different things and break the rules every now and then
