Looking straight down 2000 feet with my body extended out from a helicopter with no doors at the lava outflow from fissure #8 on Hawaii's "Big Island". This was July 29th this year and there would be 2 or 3 more days of flow at this level then it would just ... stop..
Feeling extremely lucky to have experienced it .. feel the heat, see the power and the glow, even in daylight and of course take a few photos. In this picture you can see some trees that have survived after months of flow and a few that didn't. There is a dirt road on the right that was covered by the flow.
Nature is awesome!!
