Location
I took this photo during a Tough Mudder event in New Orleans at the last obstacle on the course.Time
The photo was taken mid-morning. Edgardo was in one of the early start waves.Lighting
The weather was expected to be a down pour all day. It hardly rain that day! The skies alternated from gray skies to sunny conditions all day.Equipment
I used my Canon 5D Mark III. I have a Canon 5D Mark IV and generally use both cameras at events. Due to the weather forecast, I decided not to bring the Mark IV since it was a new camera. I used my Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 Art lens for this capture.Inspiration
I was stationed at the finish line and was bored taking photos of people crossing the finish line. So, occasionally I went up to the last obstacle (called “Happy Endings”) in order to have a little fun!Editing
I processed the photo in Lightroom. I applied a preset I like to use to give the photo a gritty/surreal feel to it. The preset is based on one the emulates Ektar 100 film.In my camera bag
For races/events, I typically have 2 cameras with my 24-70 f/2.8 and my 70-200 f/2.8. At this event, I didn’t pullout my 70-200 due to where I was stationed.Feedback
To capture a photo like this during a race/event, you have to anticipate when something cool is about to happen. I’m always looking around to find neat backgrounds and move to that area. I love capturing the environment in my photos. This photo is zoomed in more than others but this photo has to be zoomed this since it showcases the emotion Edgardo displayed after he slid down the final obstacle on the course.
