This shoot was just so special because I've been photographing this family for years! This little guy was turning one and absolutely had the very best time with his cake smash! I was shooting with a brand new 35mm 1.4 prime lens and I was super pleased with the quality of the photo!Time
This was an afternoon shoot on a day with great, flat, overcast lighting.Lighting
My primary focus with this shoot was to highlight his joy and the contagious fun he was having with his cake! Every child is different! Some are afraid to get messy, some are afraid of the attention surrounding them but this young man wasted no time diving in! HE LOVED THIS CAKE!!!!Equipment
I'm a Nikon user and I used my Nikon D810 with a Nikkor 35mm 1.4 prime lens. No flash, no reflectors, just straight shooting : )Inspiration
I've been taking pictures of this family for years and this young fellow since he was in the womb! They are one of my favorite families and the mom is up for anything! She suggested a cake smash and I was ALL IN! The whole shoot was a blast!Editing
With portrait photography I find that the less processing I do the happier I am with the final shot. I always tweak highlights and shadows and I play around with clarity but for the most part I try to keep the processing to a minimum. In my camera bag
I am a Nikon user through and through. I always have my D810 and my D650 in my bag as backup. I love my Nikkor 35mm 1.4 prime but I will also use my Nikkor 24-70mm lens a fair amount too. It really depends on what I'm trying to accomplish with each individual shot. I love prime lenses; the quality and the crispness is so beautiful, especially for portraits. I also carry a ton of memory cards, batteries and lens cleaning equipment because I like to move around on a shoot and you never know when you might need the little things. I have a Nikon SB800 flash but I rarely use it; I prefer natural light if at all possible.Feedback
When working with kids I always like to get as close as possible. I also pull back for the whole scene but once it starts getting messy there is real fun to be had with a closeup! So excited that others really enjoy this image as much as I do! My best advice would be to make sure you capture the whole scene. With a really good lens you can crop an image in post processing and know that the quality will be there.
