Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Kuwait in 2004. There were still hints of the Iraq invasion around. These boats were just off shore from the hotel.

Time

The photo was taken mid-morning, around 9:30 AM. I had some time that day to step out with my little Olympus and take a few shots.

Lighting

As you can see, it was a bit hazy that morning. The masked facility behind the boat seemed to capture my mood on the trip.

Equipment

I had a little Olympus C700 with me at the time. Hand-held.

Inspiration

I'd been in Kuwait for the week, and seen quite a bit on my trip. Security was pretty tight, but I was able to walk around the hotel grounds. After seeing so much of the remains of the war, I was a bit more aware of my surroundings. This boat, and a few others were lying on their sides, wasting away in the shallows.

Editing

This shot was originally captured in color, though with the light, it wasn't much. I decided to convert it to a black and white and it felt much more impactful to me.

In my camera bag

Quite a few cameras removed from the old Olympus. I now shoot with a Canon SL3 and often a Tamron 70-300 lense.

Feedback

I love travel and I love boats. Often, boats provide the colorful backdrop, and sometimes it's just the story they tell. I take a lot of photos and toss a lot, but I've also learned about framing from friends and other photographers. Take a lot of shots. You can always toss what you don't like!
