Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo when I flew down to Sydney, AU for a Christmas holiday and every year for the past 5 years, I always go to this same place to take photos like this one. This was at Stanwell Tops Lookout also know as Bald Hill at Stanwell Tops near Wollongong.

Time

I absolutely love this photo from that day and even from all the times I have gone there and tried to take the same kind of photo, this time I ended up capturing the best. It was about 10.00am on a sunny Friday or Saturday morning.

Lighting

This was at a time where the sun was starting to shine upon the landscape but it was a great time as the light from the sun did help create some great lighting but it wasn't too much light and shine that it ruined the lighting upon the water and cliffs.

Equipment

This was taken using a Canon EOS 1200D with a Canon 75-300mm f/4-5.6 lens. ISO 100 75mm f/10 1/250

Inspiration

I have always loved taking photos of the water and waves, especially within this area. However, I really wanted to try and capture the waves on a sunny day so the photo could show how blue the water is as well as the landscape that this location portrays from high above on the well-known cliff of "Bald Hill".

Editing

I did do some post-processing with this image. I wanted the bring out more from the colours of the water and waves to, therefore, display what it looked like from my point of view looking down at this beach. To do this, I increased the saturation just a little bit as well as adding some contrast to showcase the white and blue together. There wasn't too much to do, it was more just a few quick touches to bring out the colours more.

In my camera bag

The equipment I usually carry in my bag has changed from last year. The past years, I have had my Canon EOS 1200D and my Canon 75-300mm lens in my bag as well as my Canon 18-55mm lens. Now, due to my passion for motorsport photography and wanting to pursue that as a business, I have upgraded my lens to a Sigma 50-500mm with a Canon mount. I still have the same camera, however, I am currently saving up for a Canon 77D and I also have a Canon Speedlite 430 EX-III RT.

Feedback

Stanwell Tops Lookout in Sydney close to Wollongong can provide some great photos at any time, whether the weather is looking great or it is looking not so good. Even photos taken during a sunrise and during a sunset will create some amazing photos depending on how you take your photo and from what direction as well as the location.
