Location
This photo was taken at Umm Al Quwain Airport in the United Arab Emirates. There is a more well known abandoned Plane at the airport which is visible from the road. This one is only visible once you’ve gone around the old hangers.Time
This was taken after fourty minutes after sunset as it was getting dark.Lighting
The time between sunset and dark is my favourite. It makes for some interesting pictures. I thought it captured the faded past of this plane well. The fading light in the background helped with the ambience I was looking for.Equipment
This was shot on my trusty Nikon D4 with a wide angle lens and mounted on my tripod. For this type of scene, a tripod is almost essential.Inspiration
I had planed a trip from Dubai through some of the other Emirates and went all the way to Ras Al Kaimah. I had seen pictures of an old Ilyushin that sits at the side of the road and planned to photograph it on the way back. I pulled into the old airport about an hour before sunset and had a scout around found this, which was completely unexpected.Editing
Post processing was completed in Lightroom. I always adjust white and black point, then highlights and shadows, to bring out details in the shadows and darken down any areas that are too bright. After that, it’s about adjusting saturation and specific colour levels to create the scene you have in mind.In my camera bag
My bag always has my camera and at least two lenses - I always carry my 14mm - 24mm zoom and my 24mm - 70mm zoom. In addition, I have cleaning kit and manual release cables for very long exposures. I always have a tripod with me. I’ve used a Really Right Stuff tripod for years and would recommend them but they are expensiveFeedback
Practice capturing low light images and see how the difference in a few minutes change change the scene dramatically. Once you understand this and know how little time you can have, you realise that you need to have done some research ahead of time to look at the scene and plan the compositions you want to take. This way you can maximise the time you have available and will be more successful.
