Location
This photo was taken in the "Empty Quarter" of the Abu Dhabi Province. I is also known as the area with the "High Dunes". This is near Liwa and close to the Saudi Arabia border in the United Arab Emirates.Time
We were visiting the Qash Al Sarab desert Resort in the Empty Quarter of the Abu Dhabi Province in the UAE. We climbed the higher dune in the area and took this image of the sunset. The image was taken at 4:58pm - Just after sunset.Lighting
This dry barren world lights up at sunrise and sunset to give you these dramatic images. The light changed drastically from note to blue just after the sun disappeared behind the dunes. A perfect example of the "Blue Hour"Equipment
Canon 6D, Tamron 15-30 wide Angle Lens and using a Tripod. The lens was on 26mm. Iso 100 and I took 5 exposure bracketed shots at +2, +1, 0, -1 and -2.Inspiration
I wanted to capture the vast landscape with nothing but dunes. I visited the area earlier but were not there during sunrise or sunset. I went back to the area to get this bucket-list image. It was a hot day and we had to hike up the dunes to get to this spot. The temperature was above 45 °C but it was completely worth it.Editing
The image was taken using bracketing. I processed the image using Aurora HDR and refined it in Photoshop. The refinement included sharpening as well as contrast adjustments to enhance the structure in the dunes. In my camera bag
I used to shoot Canon and this was taken with a Canon 6D. I recently switched to Sony and now have a Sony A7 III with a 24-70 f2.8, a 70-200 f2.8 and a 150-600mm Tamron lens for wildlife. I still use the Tamron 15-30 f2.8 with a MC-11 adaptor from Sigma. I normally carry a tripod as well.Feedback
Advice from my side is to take a tripod with you. Some of these landscape shots takes patience. Plan it well and be prepared when it all comes together. Always make sure you have a strong foreground. Remember that with digital photography the work in camera is 50% of the job. The post processing is also very important.
