Behind The Lens

Location

New Orleans on Bourbon Street, Xmas day, 1989. The temperature had dropped to freezing and our connection to Denver was cancelled due to the freeze. Sadly we were on the way to my Granddaughters birth which we had missed 3 days earlier due to weather conditions. My camera shutter froze a moment later in an opened position and I gave up shooting for the day. Walked into O'brien"s for the warmth of a drink or 3 and laid the camera on the bar, had my first drink and was startled by a loud "click" as the shutter was finally warm enough to release itself. The absence of cars and people on such an iconic street seemed a bit spooky and the escorted wheelchair topped it off.

Time

Mid day as I recall. Probably 1:30 or so.

Lighting

Love to share a lighting story but I was flying by the seat of my pants and, if memory serves me, had my setting on sports mode anticipating a moving target. I usually leave my camera set there as it is easy enough to switch for a still shot wheras never enough time the other way around (trying to switch to sports mode when something happens quickly.)

Equipment

It has been almost 30 years so I am afraid memory and record keeping are no help here. I do know I was not using either a flash or tripod. Forgotten which camera and lens as I was using film at the time, not digital.

Inspiration

Pure instinct said this was a magical moment. Just lucky to catch it without slipping on the icy street as so many were doing.

Editing

Nada, nothing

In my camera bag

I always carry one reserve lens of some sort and my Galaxy S7 for backup shots where the 75-200mm I keep on the camera isn't functional. Always an extra battery for the camera (Now a Canon 60D) and 2 digital chips for emergencies. Cleaning stuff as well and some kind of plastic cover in case of rain or dust blowing around you. .

Feedback

Pay attention to your instincts! Stuff happens all around us every moment. To be aware of so much of it, don't get caught looking on one level of your vision. Rather than just focusing on the road ahead (or the street), look behind yourself periodically as well as up, and down rather than straight ahead. Surprises abound and opportunities constantly present themselves. Enjoy every moment, vision is a special gift. Ron
