The old good Santa Claus was actually descended from the ancient and vicious Celtic deity, the Great Old Man of the North, master of the icy cold and blizzard. He also was going from house to house with a canvas bag. However he gave no gifts, but collected the sacrifices that he had not received for a year. The visit of the Elder with the sack did not bode nothing well: usually, after he left, only icy corpses remained in the house. In order to protect their village from a terrible visit, the druids brought to the ferocious deity a common sacrifice - they undressed a young virgin and tied her to the tree in the frost. Her frozen corpse covered with hoarfrost became the prototype of the merry Snow Maiden accompanying Santa Claus.
