I can relate! We just got 3 1/2 feet of snow in past few days. The skis are out!

It's usually difficult to capture nuances in texture and shadows in show. You've nailed it. Excellent shot.

I just keep coming back to see this image again and again...The shadows, composition, and B&W are stunning.

I love how your image takes my eye into the center of the photo, the trees taking me then up a bit to the right, further up the hill...and then suddenly up along the curve of the mountain across the photo to the upper left edge and then ---swoosh! down the mountain across the trees to the skier...who gives scale to the beauty of your scene.

Beautiful image in every respect. Thoughtfully composed and technically perfect! A real inspiration.

Location
Mayflower Gulch, Colorado, USA. It is a 2 mile hike to this point with the skier having left the main trail and headed into the back country. He is changing the "skins" on his skies before going further.Time
It was late morning with the long shadows from the mid winter sun rather than being late in the day. The light was softened by light clouds.Lighting
Despite the somewhat soft light I had decreased the contrast, opened the shadows and decreased the highlights to soften the impact of the naturally high contrast scene.Equipment
The camera was a NIkon D800 with as Nikon 24-70 lens. It was hand held for this shot.Inspiration
I had been inside a partially collapsed mining cabin shooting the mountains out the window. As I came out I began to try to compose an image of the hillside opposite me with not much inspiration until I saw the skier coming. The stopping to make adjustments to his skies was an unexpected opportunity.Editing
Most of the processing was to soften the high contrast scene. The conversion to black and white was not much of a change as the scene was monochromatic except for bright ski pants. I applied a color filter to change the pants to dark rather than white that they were in the conversion. In my camera bag
For hiking and snow shoeing I usually carry the 24-70 and often a Nikon 14-24 along with my Nikon D800. Those are my most used lens. I do use a Nikon 70-200 and occasionally a Nikon 105 macro lens. My tripod is a Gitzo GT3542.Feedback
Snow shoeing can be a way to see some incredible scenes. Go out while it is still snowing and or soon afterward as possible. Forest trails during a snow storm are often at their best. The snow in trees and with untouched soft drifts often don't last long. The light will be best just as the storm begins to break up and often it is not as cold as it will be the next couple of days.
