On November 22, 2017 I was Gull-watching in South Haven, MI. This photo captured a magical moment and one of the most memorable experiences as a birder. This was the 3rd Snowy Owl I encountered that day. I was watching a few gulls on the beach from my vantage point about halfway down the north pier. Suddenly, I heard the cries of agitated gulls. Shifting my binoculars out over the water, a watched in amazement as this Snowy Owl flew directly towards me, under hot pursuit by several gulls. It literally landed only yards from where I was standing. I had to take several steps back to get this owl to fit into my frame, and it looked right at me for this once-in-a-lifetime shot. It flew off a few minutes later and joined another Snowy Owl on top of a cottage a ways down the beach. Such a magical moment and caught forever in a camera lens.
