I wasn't sure whether to publish this image or not, and I'm still not really sure. I finally decided to, as there is an element to it that I like.
There is a level of simplicity and balance that appeals to me, and I wanted to see what other people thought.

Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at Glattalp in Switzerland, walking up towards Grossbodenkreuz. You can read more about this location, and why you should make sure your tripod is stable in this blog entry. https://www.followinglight.ch/blog/2017/10/13/back-to-bisisthal-day-one

Time

It was taken at 0919h in October. This is later than expected for this kind of scene, but the mountains delayed the arrival of the sun.

Lighting

The lighting is completely natural. I had to walk up the other side of the valley for a while to get to a point where the sun was just coming over the mountain on the other side.

Equipment

I used an Olympus OM-D E-M1 MK-2 and a m.zuiko 7-14mm f/2.8. It was shot handheld because I could no longer attach it to a tripod, due to an accident the day before. My tripod had fallen over while the camera was still attached. It fell roughly two meters to the ground, dented the focus ring of the lens and split open the base of the camera, hence no longer being able to attach it to the tripod. The camera obviously still worked, but I'm not sure whether this affected the structure of the flare or not.

Inspiration

Location and moment. I was in the mountains to take landscape photos. While hiking up the valley the sky on the other side was getting brighter. I was walking and waiting for the moment when the sun would peek over the summit.

Editing

There was very little post-processing. Apart from the obvious 1:1 crop, I only reduced the shadows slightly in the lower half of the image, and increased the highlights a little bit.

In my camera bag

My equipment varies depending on what I plan on doing. On this trip I had an Olympus OM-DE-M1 MK-2, m.zuiko 7-14mm f/2.8, m.zuiko 300mm f/4 IS pro, m.zuiko 40-150mm f/2.8 pro and m.zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 pro. In addition I also had extra batteries, SD-cards and as always my trusted tripod, a Gitzo GT2542LOS.

Feedback

The best advice is simply to get outside and take pictures. You can only plan to a certain extent, weather can change, situations can change, something unexpected can happen. For the chance to take this image, I planned to be in the mountains, I planned to go out and see something new. I didn't plan on being in this spot at this time, with a clear sky, and I couldn't plan the flare. Oh, and make sure that you tripod is stable before turning around, so that your camera doesn't fall two meters to the rocky ground below!
