well done on your win. it was a tough choice between the two top contenders. In the end the immaculate and natural lead in here, together with classic composition won my vote

Behind The Lens

Location

In an area in South Australia, known as The Flinders Ranges are many delightful photographic places. The colour of the landscape draws you in, the mountains and the rocks, plus the sparseness and wide open spaces have a way of drawing you back again and again. This was taken on a drive through Bunyeroo Gorge, and the drive here known as Razorback lookout.

Time

When driving in the Flinders Ranges South Australia, the general thoughts to get good images are to have the Sun behind you as you travel through. However on this day we went more South/North, and then faced West again to be at this well known landmark. We were facing West, but thankfully the Sun was not a problem as the cloud created a more muted tone to the day. This was taken at 2.15pm on the afternoon in the Spring of September

Lighting

This could have been quite a different look had the day been Sunny with glaring light, then my image would have had to have been adjusted to different settings, and possibly the whole scene may have been lacking in the muted colours that you see here. I was very fortunate to have the cloud cover as it helped bring out the true colours of the Flinders Ranges. A clear sky would have made for a more dramatic contrast, and the colour of the mountains more purple in colour.

Equipment

I use a Nikon D7000, it has been a faithful friend to me over a number of year. I also used a Tripod as I didn't want to find later that had I not used one my image might not be as sharp as it could have been, so a tripod was a must.

Inspiration

Travelling through the Flinders Ranges there are many things that can inspire you. I had been there before and going back was a 'must' for me. every time it is different, the mood and the light all play a part in what you see on that particular day. As you drive through the Bunyeroo Gorge and when you finally arrive at the particular spot on the hill, the view just blows you away. Light and colour, as well as the Vista are an inspiration in itself.

Editing

Yes, I added some contrast and clarity, along with a little vibrancy to bring it to how my eye saw the view, along with a small amount of sharpening.

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon D7000, my 24-120 m Nikon lens, plus my wide angle ,Sigma 12-24ml. My remote shutter release, Polarizer filter, and a few Graduated filters, Lint free cleaning cloth.Battery Tripod. Also carry my Nikon 80-400ml lens for any birds that may take my eye etc, as well as a Macro 90ml Tamron lens, plus a small torch.

Feedback

Firstly you need to come to Australia, or if you live here, then visit Flinders Ranges,SA and stay a few days. There is much to see, good walking shoes/boots if you hike, I would suggest if you have the time to choose the best time of day, which may be early morning with the Sun rising, or of you are fortunate like I was then early enough in the afternoon. The Sun will set behind these mountains, and while I haven't been there then, you may happen to get a dramatic Sunset. Check out the views of others and see when they have taken their shots, check the weather, but just enjoy the magic that this place has no matter what the time you visit.
