Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the floor of my old flat in Liverpool right before I went on a backpacking trip

Time

This was taken in the afternoon when I had come home from my lunch break from work!

Lighting

The lighting is an overhead standard room lamp with a lightbox (as shown) Infront of a large Georgian window to aid lots of natural light. I used some vaseline on my face to aid with highlighting due to limited resources.

Equipment

I used a Nikon DX40 for this shot with. Tamron lens. I don't recommend my method of two stacked chairs and a tray with grates as a tripod though ???? but it was all I had available at the time!

Inspiration

I had begun a travelblog and needed a headshot for my profile. A few weeks after this I went backpacking across Malaysia. I had also loved in Norway, and Northern America as well as the UK and travelled Europe before this so wanted to highlight this with the map. I am keen on photography but am also well known for my big red hair which is why I featured it this way. I was inspired by old fashioned painted portraits where objects would convey personality of the featured person.

Editing

In the post processing I highlighted the contrast in my face and let the background fall soft. I also made my face slightly more detailed to add to the sense of motion (turning of the head/ hair flowing).

In my camera bag

I usually have just my standard DSLR, something with a torch, an umbrella and a solar filter. I also have a small tripod which can be gripped onto different objects. A coin and some vaseline are also small extras that can do nifty tricks.

Feedback

Think about your subject, ask them what they want to convey about their personality. Do they have any objects that represent this? Experiment with different layouts and light until you get the right look.
