For a portfolio shoot H&S (head & shoulders) are shot or cropped to vertical...She needs to know this and more if she wants a quality portfolio.

Lovely photo , Dacemac was not criticizing he was offering really good constructive advice Portrait/Head shots need to be cropped portrait not landscape for a professional Portfolio . Again Beautiful Shot

My friend and I agreed that we could always crop and do some post-production work, but this is the original image :)

Nice capture, there are no rules that you should use vertical for portraits I I can see the advice below just to make it stand out more, would be to crop it. one thing to learn is rule of thirds and you will I am sure you will do very well. if you have some basic software just crop it and save a copy and you will still retain the original as it is. The first critique has got it right you have to start somewhere good luck
