A driftwood carving of an Owl in a Pacific Coast Arbutus tree at Brickyard Park in Nanoose, Vancouver Island. The Arbutus (or Pacific Madrone) is Canada’s only native broad-leafed evergreen and can be found no more than 8 km. away from the waters of the Pacific. The Coast Salish First Nations used the arbutus bark and leaves to create medicines for colds, stomach problems, tuberculosis, and as the basis for contraceptives. Also, according to the Great Flood legends of several bands in the northwest, the Arbutus helped people survive by providing an anchor on top of a mountain. Because of this the Saanich people do not burn madrone out of thanks for saving them
