Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in a regional park called Mission Trails in San Diego California. I'm a passionate pursuer of beauty and I love hiking around in this area just for exercise and relaxation. I explore the many areas here and am constantly finding new areas and specific places to photograph.

Time

This is a fun and memorable day for me as my daughter (pictured here) and her friend asked me to take photos of them for their social media. They were lying around the house and were kind of bored and thought it would be a fun thing to do. Because I always want to be photographing of course I said yes. This shot was taken in the early stages of Golden Hour.

Lighting

Most photographers are afraid to shoot into the light, but that's one of my favorite things to do and some of the reasons why I get some spectacular shots. I thought the lighting for this image was beautiful the way that it lit her hair on fire and added to the glow of the flowers and the time of day.

Equipment

I love my Sony A68 for many reasons and this was the camera I used. The lens was a DT 1.8/50 SAM (50MM Sony) I didn't use a flash and I purposely moved the camera around until I had a little lens flare. Sometimes I really love lens flares and feel they ad a softness to the final image.

Inspiration

I spent about an hour taking images of the girls in this natural setting and this photo was taken toward the end. The girls were walking ahead of me heading back to the car, when I asked my daughter to stop for a minute and look back at me. It was very natural and candid and then she decided to drop her jacket down to show her shoulder and that was the money shot in my opinion.

Editing

I always do post processing to some degree with all of my images. To me, editing is part of the entire creative process that I very much enjoy. Some photos require more and some require less but I'm always playing around a little to see make a final image that portrays the story I'm wanting to tell.

In my camera bag

I have three lenses, one camera and extra batteries/cards just in case. I also carry cleaning equipment to make sure my lenses are always spot free.

Feedback

Absolutely. Find a natural place in your area and find a background you think is attractive. In this case, wildflowers represent so much to me. Youth, freedom, uncontrolled, beauty, vulnerability... among other things. Make sure that you talk with your model and have him/her feel comfortable with you. Make sure to take more than one shot and keep taking the shots as you are talking with your model. I suggest being funny at first to make them laugh or shrug or react spontaneously. This loosens up the mood and the following photos will be much more natural. Hope that helps and thank you so much for enjoying the photo and asking more about it.
