I was doing a solo drive from Melbourne to Adelaide. I wanted the photo to have the feel I what I was feeling. I was alone and felt some distance from people on this journey of reflection (I mean this in a positive way). In editing the photo to B&W, I wanted to portray the mood of solitude and distance yet graceful and strong.Equipment
Olympus OMD-e5 II (hand-held) and 12 - 40mm pro lensInspiration
I love lighthouses and the Great Ocean Rd has several beauties along its coastline. I loved the pathway leading to the lighthouse and the contrast of the lighthouse at the end. It’s looked imposing and strong.Editing
I shoot in RAW and use the Olympus software to do the basic editing such as sharpen, high/low key, etc. I then usually finish off with photoshop to make the image “pop”. This photo I converted into B&W using Photoshop - their palette of B&W options, then teamed the contrast up and played with the exposure. In my camera bag
Olympus OMD e5 mkII and now the OMD e1 Mark II. 6 batteries for the e5 and 2 for e1 (as itheyre mirrorless the e5 can use a lot of power). Olympus Pro lenses 12-40mm and 40-150mm. (Next purchase will be Panasonic 200 - 400) 10 stop ND Filter Mini-tripod Cleaning stuff Sturdy tripod - I now usually carry it most times. I like to travel quite light with my equipment, no large bags etc (i want to get used to going light as doing safari in Africa in 2019 means a total weight limit inclusive of all personal items clothing etc and camera equipment is limited to 20kg)Feedback
Understand composition, really think about what you want to include/exclude in your photo, breathe and relax - there’s no rush, connecting with an inanimate object sounds weird but think about how you are feeling when you look at your subject - what mood does it evoke in you. Take lots of snaps as for this photo clouds move and can change the whole look and feel/drama of your photo, especially as it’s the only thing that can move in the photo, and while it’s not the key focal point it has an impact on the overall feel of the photo (and you only need one awesome photo)!
