Tripod is 100% necessary. You have to have it. If you don't it is going to be extremely difficult to get a self portrait. As far as time of year, you really need to pay attention to what people are talking about when it comes to wild flowers. They are here one day and gone the next, so you really have to have your ear to the ground and be ready for a spontaneous adventure.
