While travelling the Silk Road from Shanghai through to Istanbul back in late 2015, I visited the Turpan (aka Tulufan) in Xinjiang province, China. Outside the town lie the ruined ancient silk road cities of Jiaohe and Gaochang. I hired a local taxi for the day and drove around the area visiting these ancient sites and local Uighur villages.
