M42, the Great Orion Nebula. Located in the constellation Orion, M42 is 1,270 light years from Earth and about 24 light years in diameter. I captured this image on 3-1-17 under pretty good seeing conditions. Orion is a very recognizable constellation in the winter and spring skies and this nebula can actually be seen with binoculars or a small telescope in a clear, dark sky.
