Saw not cruel in your tags and had to comment. I have 2 personal friends that have farms and cows. Tagging is not cruel and is of a benefit to a cow. If you do some research or talk to someone who does it, it is not unlike a human getting their ear pierced.
Best examples are: When a calf is born, it gets the same number tag as it's mother. There is a lot of info on them such as sex, dob, etc. No many reasons to mention but the best one is that when a family has a huge herd and needs to bring one in for for a health issue, it is much easier to find.
