This photo was taken just down the road from my house, in the Columbia Valley, in SE BC, Canada.Time
In order to get the image I wanted, had to wait for a sunny day, morning, more accurately. The optimum time of day was 10:30 -11:00 am, as I wanted the shadows to be covering as much of the untouched snow as I could get.Lighting
The angle of the sun was pretty low on the horizon, as it was mid January, in 2017, when I took this photo. The low sun helped to compensate for the brightness of the sun-snow combination, and created the nice long shadows, as well as gave the snow some texture of its own. It was a pretty winter day, and not too cold, so I was able fly my drone. I did make sure I had an extra battery with me, as I wanted to get 2 flights in.Equipment
I used my 'DJI Phantom 2 Vision Plus' drone for this capture. The camera is surprisingly good, and even in this brightness of the snow, was able to produce a nice white balance. The drone comes with the camera already attached gimbal, and it is very responsive to the tilting and turning of the drone during flight, and produces fantastic video as well.Inspiration
I drive past this strip of trees in one of my neighbours fields every day, I marvel at the colours of them in the fall, in springtime they are a bright green, summer finds many a birds nest, and evidence of little critters everywhere you look at the base of the trees. Winter is a naked time for them, creating skeleton like shadows, with long boney fingers pointing to the north. Looking at these shadows one day, I thought 'I just have to get that photo!', I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted my photo to look like, so I watched and waited to see what the optimum time of day would be to capture it, until finally, all the requirements, (and my drone flying skills), were ready. So off I went.Editing
This is a pretty simple photo, with not much for colour, so, for post prepossessing, I sharpened it a touch, adjusted the brightness, and then added some contrast. That is about it.In my camera bag
For this photo, I used the camera that comes on my drone, but in general, I use a Nikon D600. A few of my favourite lenses are my Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM, ( my most used and go to lens), a Nikkor AF-S VR 24-120mm. For specific subjects I use my Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sport lens. I don't leave home without my remote, my tripod, and a few extra memory cards. I usually have my Kinko Tubes, and a few lens filters as well. My bag can get pretty heavy sometimes, as I hate wanting something that I don't have with me. When hiking too far from the truck, I tend to be a little more careful of how much equipment I take in my bag.Feedback
I would certainly advise someone else taking a photos using drones, to be sure to know the rules, and use common sense. Photography on a cold day can be challenging, I always carry an extra battery, (and keep it warm), regardless of which camera I am using at the time, so it is not a waisted trip. Time of day can be crucial to capturing the right lighting, especially in winter, and generally I prefer the mornings, since the sun is less harsh.
