One of my favorite shooting experiences was the Louvre at night. The light from the moon breaking through the creamy clouds formed through 6 second exposures which made simple yet detailed photos. I am still learning a lot about photography and was very happy with the outcome of this set.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Paris outside of the Louvre while walking back to our hotel after dinner.

Time

This was probably about 10 or 11 at night. I was walking around looking for photo opportunities. This is one of those rare moments no one was around.

Lighting

It was a little tricky to get the best exposure with all the dark lights and shadows. Shooting with a crop sensor didn’t help.

Equipment

I shot this with a Sony A6000 and a tripod.

Inspiration

I thought the Louvre looked better at night. Less people, better lighting added definition to the structures. During the day it’s just glass in a sea of people.

Editing

Yes, I edited the colors and lighting slightly in photoshop. The colors out of the camera were not ideal initially.

In my camera bag

My A6000, at least 3 lens. I usually carry my 35 f/1.8, 85 f/1.8, 12mm f/2.0, and sometimes my 18-105 f/4. These generally cover any need.

Feedback

Go back at night when possible. During the day these tourist spots are so crowded you’re better off taking street style portraits. Always carry a small tripod as well.
