Finding this species was one of the most fun times herping i have had in a long while! It's always fun herping... but usually, to find the species i most desire to see it takes strenuous hikes through untouched habitat, mosquitoes and sandflies carrying various diseases and parasites, soggy hiking boots, and torn up limbs... not this time! Beach herping!
(FYI ... herping = looking for reptiles and amphibians, derived from the word herpetology)
The hardest part about this mission was not sleeping. I happened to be in the right habitat when tides were at the most inconvenient times... which meant searching high tides at 10 pm then low tides at 4am ... and then to capture a shot i had envisioned, I had to wait for sunrise when some where still making it back out to sea before the tide started picking up. But I'm happy with the result and think it was worth the effort.
Have always dreamed of finding these gentle predators....and they did not disappoint. Saw individuals of various sizes ...the largest being a monster female at 133cm long. I even encountered a pair mating.
