This photo was taken from a flight in a small plane over the Kluane National Park in the Yukon - the westernmost territory of Canada. It was an amazing experience to look down on the glaciers and the moraine... and be so close to snow covered peaks. The plane we were in only took 5 people and I was lucky to get the backseat with no one beside me, so I was taking photos from both sides - the scenery was so incredible, I didn't want to miss a shot. I think everyone likes this shot because it's not often that you see two flows meeting like this. I live in Alberta and really love the mountains and glaciers anyway, so getting a close-up view was just amazing.Time
The flight was in the morning - earlier would have been better but we were subject to their flight schedule.Lighting
The lighting was quite good - a bit sunny with medium cloud cover, so it wasn't too difficult to adjust. I normally work in all manual, but for this adventure, I put the focus on automatic because you really have to act fast or you have flown over what you wanted to capture.Equipment
I was using my Nikon D800 with a 24-120 zoom - I think this was the best choice to react quickly. I wish I could have had a higher zoom, but my 400 requires a tripod and I was afraid my shots would be blurry. The plane bounced around quite a bit.Inspiration
well, the majesty of these glaciers merging is quite incredible.Editing
I did have to do some post-processing to most of the photos taken from the plane because of the glass. I had to adjust the levels to bring up the contrast. In my camera bag
I always have my Nikon D800, a zoom lens 24-120, a 50mm, and a 20mm. Sometimes, if I'm taking a lot of close-ups, I'll have my 60mm Micro - a lovely lens for great bokeh. I always have a couple polarizing filters as well.Feedback
If you get the chance to see the Kluane, take it! And a flight over the glaciers is so well worth the expense! You may even get a glimpse of Mt. Logan, the highest peak in Canada. I suppose the front seat beside the pilot would be good, but if you can get the back seat all to yourself to be able to take photos from both sides, that is best. My body was really sore afterwards from contorting while still keeping my seatbelt on, but the shots were worth it. I'm so thrilled to get so many likes for this shot!
