Location
This photo was taken in St. Joseph Peninsula State Park Florida.Time
The photo was taken at sunset. Jessica at the time was a dear friend. We had both moved to Florida from Ohio at nearly the same time and worked at the same place. I say she "was" a dear friend and she still is but she is also now my sister in law. It was a Sunday and we were were hanging out at the beach together. I took her to one of my favorite beaches where it is beautiful and pretty secluded. We just enjoyed the day, took some pictures and at sunset I wanted to try this shot. I like silhouettes and had this in my mind and wanted to see if I could capture what i pictured in my head. It turned out how I wanted.Lighting
You know I got lucky with the lighting. It turned out to be a clear day and the sunset was beautiful. I wanted to capture the setting sun behind her to get the silhouette I wanted.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D610 using a 50mm/f1.8 lens. I shot in burst mode at high speed to catch the water how I wanted. It was a bit nerve wracking having my camera in the water getting pushed around by the waves getting low in the water to get the angle I wanted. At one point I stepped on a stingray and felt it's barb hit right under my ankle. I got out of the water quickly to check it and see if it broke the skin. Luckily it did not.Inspiration
I love silhouettes. They tell a story without the distraction of the details of the subject. I wanted to capture motion, water, the shape of her body, and the setting sun. We took hundreds of shots to capture this one.Editing
I did darken it to get a better silhouette and removed some glare to get deeper colors. In my camera bag
I have two Nikon D610's. I normally keep a 70 - 300mm on one and a fixed 50mm on the other.Feedback
Take a lot of shots. Be persistent and don't give up till you see what you want. When I took the series, this set of bursts and looked at it I knew I had what I wanted. Position yourself to get the right angle. Be sure to tell your subject how you want their arms placed, it makes a big difference and if they are not right it looks ackward.
