Behind The Lens
Location
In my parking lot. I built a stage for the dancers to protect their feet from the asphalt in the parking lot with plywood. And viola, hung up black seamless paper and brought my strobes outside.Time
I wanted to make sure that there wasn't any harsh sunlight on my subjects, so I had them all arrive in the afternoon. It was good too because there was a lot of setting up outside.Lighting
I used one main light and and a kicker. The kicker light is giving her some rim light around the top of her hair and forehead. And the main light was camera left.Equipment
I shot with a Canon DIII. I typically use my 85mm prime as my go to lens. I just like the effect on portraits that the 85 offers.Inspiration
I had seen Ben Shirk's flour images and wanted to try it out to see what I could create. After working non stop on client work for the past year, I hadn't really shot anything for me. To fulfill me. Inspire me. Re-energize me, I so decided just to try out it and see what I could come up with.Editing
i did do a little post-processing here. I used some flour brushes that can be downloaded from Dan Frievalt or Woody Walters. There were some fly away hairs that bothered me, so I took those out. But pretty much straight out of camera otherwise. In my camera bag
I always have my 85mm in my bag. And now I am really trying to get in the habit of using my tripod. I haven't found one that I am in love with yet. I like my equipment be easy to carry and light weight. I do use strobes outside as well. I use the 360 Dx or a 600 when on location with a client. Otherwise I have Alien Bees in my studio.Feedback
Research building a dance floor. It was easy and now I have it for any event. Dancers need to protect their feet, so really being aware of where they might be jumping is important. And doing this outside was very key! There was a huge mess outside, but we just rolled it up in the seamless paper and were able to throw it out. Had I done this in my studio, it would have been a nightmare!
