Location
This photos was taken during a real wedding, the venue’s name is Oakfield Farm Wedding Venue in Gauteng South Africa.Time
This photos was taken at around 22:00 at night. To create a beautiful lit sparkler photo, the ambient light should be almost minimal. If its too dark then you dont know where you are going, if its too bright then you are shown on the final photo...and you have to do more editing to remove you.Lighting
The lighting setup was very simple. The camera is on a tripod, and there’s a flash behind the couple and one photo right pointing at the couple. You should be able to see the difference in color on trees behind couple...that is their shadow.Equipment
I used a Nikon d750 with a Sigma 35mm f1.4 ART lense. I also used 2 Nikon flashes, one SB910 and one SB800 and I used Phottix STRATO II triggers and receivers.Inspiration
I am a wedding photographer and I wanted to diversify and wanted something to make my work stand out, so I decided that I will create sparkler night photos for all my clients, and the ones I did for Natalie and Kenton was most definitely the best effort. I also love how different thay look, such as Kenton with his sneakers.Editing
I ran the photo through Lightroom and I use VSCO presets which I tune a little. I also used photoshop to remove me out of the photo. I only showed a little becuase there was very little ambient light. I also make sure that the ISO is rather low so that I dont show on the image when I run around the couple, but also not too low then the image wont show other details like the stars. The photo is also created with setting the camera on a 30s exposure, and I dont have a remote so I use the timer function. And I also set the camera on Rear Curtain Flash, so I create the exposure of the scene by running around my clients and then just before the 30s expires the flashes then fires. In my camera bag
Nikon d750 Nikon d700 Nikon 85mm f1.4D Nikon 24-70mm f2.8G Sigma 35mm f1.4 ART Phottix triggers and receivers Nikon SB910 flash Nikon SB800 flash Yongnuo D160 video lightFeedback
Just make sure that there are no lights shining on you or the couple, then you wont show on the photo. The lower the ISO the better. Also put the couple in front of something interesting, becuase the flash is used to paint with light so the better looking the surroundings the better the result...but that is good advice for any night shot.
