Location
The photo was taken at La Herradura beach in Lima, Peru. I was showing a friend around Lima so we visited the beach. It was a large swell and the waves were crashing up against the rocks while the surfers waited for a lull to be able to safely jump into the Ocean.Time
The photo was taken in the afternoon in the brief moment the surfers were lined up and waiting for the right time to enter the Ocean and join the line up.Lighting
The light was flat with the surfers almost becoming silhouettes against the sky and ocean behind them. It was for this reason I decided to convert the image into black and white. I think the black and white also emphasises the power of the ocean.Equipment
I used a Canon 500D handheld with my go to lens a 50mm 1.4. Only natural lighting was used.Inspiration
Being a surfer myself I am always inspired by the the power of the ocean. Having no zoom lens it was difficult to action photos of the surfers actually riding the waves so I decide instead to capture them as they waited to enter the ocean.Editing
Only converting the image to black and white and slightly adjusting the levels to bring out some details in the rocks and foreground. In my camera bag
I now use a Canon 5D Mark 2, with a number of lenses including the 50mm, an 85mm prime 1.8 and the Canon Fisheye 8 - 15mm. However, more often than not I just carry the camera itself with the 50mm.Feedback
Peru gets very consistent surf although beaches such as this one require a big swell so it is good to follow the weather to decide when the waves will be big enough for the particular beach to work. Get close to the action and take plenty of shots.
