I shot this in a little park near my house, the Rose Gardens of Farmers Branch. They do a pretty good job of trying to keep something blooming year round, so it's a nice place to wander around and take picturesTime
I shot this late in the afternoon on a partly cloudy day. Honestly I was just trying to get out of the house, I didn't do much setup on this oneLighting
Being later in the afternoon there were starting to be a few shadows, the light wasn't too harsh. I manipulated the lighting and colors on this one quite a bit in Lightroom though.Equipment
I shot this hand-held with a Canon 70D and an 85mm F1.8 lens, no flash. The 85mm is a good lens for this kind of work, but not great - the closest focal distance leaves a bit to be desired, but the wide aperture makes for great depth of field if things work out.Inspiration
um, exercise? :-) This really was an opportunistic shot, I didn't really plan anything.Editing
As I mentioned I did quite a bit of work on this one in Lightroom, mostly to darken the background so as not to distract from the blooms. I also brought the colors out a bit.In my camera bag
These days I'll usually have the 70D, a 5D Mark III, and a few extra lens that fit what I'll be shooting. I don't like changing lenses out in the open, so I'll try and pick out what I think will work beforehand. Don't forget the extra batteries!Feedback
I usually treat flowers similar to a portrait - as wide an aperture as you can get away with and still have the primary subject all in focus, but still get the nice bokeh in the background.
