Behind The Lens

Location

Took this image at Corella Dam in Queensland

Time

I had spent a few days watching and photographing these beautiful birds and on the fifth day worker out where I should be to get this shot. The event happened at about 3.40 pm while they were feeding and returning to their favourite perch.

Lighting

The day was sunny but at this time a small thin cloud passed between the sun and the subject enhancing the Rainbow Bee Eater and produced colour and sheen.

Equipment

I was using my nature kit at the time a Canon 7D with a Canon 100-400 L Series F4 lens mounted on a tripod and using a shutter release cable. I had my focus on their branch and took a series of images as they flew in.

Inspiration

I have always loved these birds and had been photographing them for several years trying to get the shot I wanted.

Editing

No post processing apart from cropping on this image

In my camera bag

The kit mentioned above is my nature kit. For landscapes I use a Canon 760 Body with either a Canon L series 24 105 mm lens L series lens or a 14mm wide angle manual lens for night shooting and startrails.

Feedback

Study your subject get to know their habits and position yourself to get the image you want. In a new site this usually takes a few days. I was camped just 15 metres from where these birds were landing.
