Location
I took this photo in my studio in Los Angeles. It was for a personal project. I used 2 Profoto heads on Matthews light stands positioned at a 45° angle behind the model. Hung a 12'x12' duvetyne (Black heavy cloth) approximately 7' behind the model. The light was slightly "feathered" to avoid hot spots. I used a Canon camera with a f/2.8 24-70 zoom. Camera setting were f/8 at 1/200sec shutter speed. I took a meter reading and "opened up" 1 stop to get a harder light effect. There were no lights or reflectors in front. It was more a study about shape and form of the human body.Time
The shot was taken indoors in a photo studio so time of day is not relevant. But I think it was around 4:00pmLighting
The lights are Profoto heads used in conjunction with a Profoto A7 pack. But this look can be achieved with any decent strobe unit. The real challenge is getting your subject to relax and give you great poses.Equipment
Used a Canon EOS 5Ds Mark II, f/2.8 24-70mm zoom, Profoto 7A pack and 2 heads on Matthews stands, 2 Matthews 40" C-Stands as background stands and a 12x12 black duvetyne, and a Minolta 4F Light Meter.Inspiration
The model has an incredible physique and wanted to capture the beauty and essence of the human form.Editing
Shot raw and processed the files in Lightroom. Created a B&W file and exported as a Tiff file into Photoshop. Did minor adjustments using the curves and levels. Created a low res jpg for web use.In my camera bag
I have a Canon 5Ds and 5D Mark IV, f/4 16-35mm, f/4 24-70mm, f/1.4 85mm and a f/2.8 70-200mm. Minolta 4F Light Meter, various filters including circular polarizers, ND filters, 4 point star filter and a Tiffen Black Pro Mist 1/4 filter. Other gear includes, extra camera battery and charger, AA & AAA batteries, small tactical rechargeable flashlight, sunscreen, a first aide kit, compass, extra charging lighting phone cable (For iPhones), a color checker and a 18% grey card.Feedback
Yes, practice, practice , practice. Only through practicing will you mastery over your craft. Do be afraid to fail. Always ask yourself this question "What would happen if.......? Fill in the question. In other words, always be curious and have a open mind to all possibilities.
