Behind The Lens

Location

I took this in my backyard on a sunny afternoon. The dragonfly was a great model and was happy to sit on the metal yard ornament. It was fearless so I could take lots of photos. This was my favorite.

Time

I'm always looking in the yard for butterflies, bees, dragonflies and anything that I can use my macro. This was a sunny afternoon when I noticed the copper colored dragonfly sitting on a rusted garden ornament. I ran for my camera and luckily it was enjoying the sunshine. I'd never seen one this color.

Lighting

It was a lovely sunny summer day. In California there are rarely clouds in the summer. The backyard has full sun. This allowed the dragonfly to reflect the light

Equipment

I used my favorite little Fujifilm Finepix F300exr which is always available to take immediate shots. It takes great macros.

Inspiration

I just love to take macros of anything, especially any kind of critter or center of a flower to create a design. I just thought this color was so unusual for a dragonfly.b

Editing

I imaging I took this into photoshop and enhanced the lighting a bit. I might have cropped it too. I do most of my photos to try to get a pleasing composition. I'm never sure which ones have been through this process, but the processing would have been minimal.

In my camera bag

I now use two cameras. My small Fujifilm finepix F300exr which I use for macros and general use and my bigger but still light Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 with it's zoom lens. I like to keep the equipment light and have found that these are versitile, easy to use, portable and give great photos. I've owned two Fujifilm cameras and both have been great.

Feedback

Look for small things in nature. Insects are wonderful. Take a close look at the design and color. They are amazing. What a better way than a macro shot. Be patient and quiet. Many will pose and provide a great model.
