The girls on this team were not present for their team picture day so I stepped in to give them something to hold on to. Many images were captured but this was my favorite. The girls decided to name their inaugural team "The Mean Girls". With that in mind I wanted to capture them all giving me a snarl. Despite their chosen name each one of this little princesses were amazing young women and quite sweet natured. The young lady blowing the bubble at this moment is a highlight for me personally.

As a 25 year veteran yearbook adviser, I would say WOO HOO!! That has got to be the best team (of any sport) photo I've ever seen. How cute to line them up by size from ball to coach. By far better than any normal "facing front" team shot. I sure would like to share this at yearbook camp . . . any chance I could do that?

Behind The Lens

Location

This image was captured in the small city of Moody, Alabama. The team photo wasn't taken because they scheduled them during spring break and none of the girls were there. I told them I would be honored to help them out. The name the girls decided on for the team was "Moody's Mean Girls", so after doing a few poses we lined them up like this and I asked them to scowl at me. I will admit it wasn't intentional to have the girl blowing the bubble but it truly made this my favorite image that day.

Time

The is truly one of my favorite captures in my time behind the lens. This photo was taken just minutes before the final game of the season at 11:15 AM on Saturday May 21, 2016. It was a cool spring day with perfect weather for football.

Lighting

I was fortunate to have wonderful natural light that day because of the amazing weather so I didn't need to use my external flash. The Spring and Summer in the state of Alabama has been wonderful for outdoor photography in 2016.

Equipment

When I go to capture images I pack basically the same thing for every trip. I use a 2006 Canon EOS Xt (I know I need a new one but she has been so good to me), my tripod and my two favorite lenses Canon 18-55mm and Canon 70-300mm, I pack my external flash and multiple battery packs for my camera and my flash. I like to bring extra memory cards for those moments you are seeing the beauty in everything and don't want to run out of storage.

Inspiration

My daughter loves my photography and when I was told they weren't going to have a team photo, I had to help them out. My daughter is the tiny one in front with her foot on the ball. I couldn't say no to someone that is proud of me no matter what. My inspiration is always to be THE hero in the eyes of my children and this gave me another opportunity to not only help my daughter but her teammates as well.

Editing

Usually when you capture a team portrait people want you to edit out the imperfections but I think in the world of sport teams that is what gives you the character of a competitor. I did use Light room to mildly adjust the saturation to get those colors popping. Not a great deal of post-processing was needed for the Nine angelic "Mean Girls" in the frame. Very easy shot.

In my camera bag

When I go to capture images I pack basically the same thing for every trip. I use a 2006 Canon EOS Xt (I know I need a new one but she has been so good to me), my tripod and my two favorite lenses Canon 18-55mm and Canon 70-300mm, I pack my external flash and multiple battery packs for my camera and my flash. I like to bring extra memory cards for those moments you are seeing the beauty in everything and don't want to run out of storage.

Feedback

I like to tell others that patience is your greatest ally while shooting. Constantly stay in your mind, thinking, "I have completed everything on the list that I wanted to accomplish but now that you are out there, what more can you capture?" This art is subjective. Something I find beautiful may not be something others would want to see and vice versa. For other amateurs, like me, I like to tell them that 1. Learn your camera. This is your tool, an extension of your body, respect it and it will, in turn, respect you. 2. Be Patient. You can rush through any national park or zoo and never see anything. Relax, open your eyes and ears. The images will find you. 3.Have Fun. If it isn't enjoyable, why do it? Different Strokes for Different Folks but these are what has been working for me. Happy Shooting!
