Location
This photo was taken while I was out wandering around Death Valley National Park, CA where there is a wonderful little area called Furnace Creek.Time
I usually try to stop by Furnace Creek/Death Valley sometime in the early afternoons to try and beat the worst of the heat there. It was very important to me that on this particular visit not to be in there again during the harsh summer months. The summer before this visit I had been taking pictures of the dust devils in the distance, no tripods, it was 117 degrees, no shade and extremely hot and very windy which was feeling like a blow torch to your body and eyes, the elements had no mercy on anyone there that day! Due to the extremes that I had encountered in Furnace Creek/Death Valley- my camera was not happy with me at all! The shutter got stuck in the open position due to heat and wind and it created a lovely huge bright white sometimes yellow thick line down the center of my photographs. So I had chosen to make this visit midday on a very sunny beautiful Spring day in April.Lighting
It was broad daylight with minimal shading available from the building, so the lighting was pretty much perfect for that day. I had to be aware of where I was standing so that I wasn't casting shadows on the roses.Equipment
This was shot with my Canon 70D EFS 55-250mm Image Stabilizer Macro 0.85m/2.8ft; my favorite lens.Inspiration
I would have never thought of beautiful roses growing in a location such as Death Valley/Furnace Creek, California. The name says it all; everywhere you look there's desert and sand and the temperature is almost always unbearably too hot to handle we're talking triple digits! But if you manage to get out to Death Valley,Furnace Creek area during early Spring when it's much cooler, then you'll see all sorts of variations of plants growing amazingly it's even more stunning out there than in the summer months. I always stop by Furnace Creek to see what's new in the stores but mainly to escape the heat. On this particular visit I had noticed thru doors on the opposite side of the shop that there were roses outside and I was taken back on how beautiful they were so I had to stop and take a few pictures.Editing
As for post-processing there wasn't much that needed to be done on the particular rose photograph. I touched up the pink colors to be as close to what I had seen also I had to lighten this photo up a little bit due to this rose was close to a building which was casting dark shadows. In my camera bag
I have to keep my equipment as light as possible when I'm by myself due to past physical injuries so what's usually in my bag is minimal. I've always got my Canon EFS 55-250mm Image Stabilizer lens on my camera at all times which is my go-to lens, EFS 18-55mm Image Stabilizer, lens cleaner due to I'm usually outdoors, extra batteries and of course my Dr.Pepper. If I have all of these the world is good!Feedback
I'm very much an amateur photographer who prefers to take photos as unchanged as possible. I've been taking photos for as long as I can remember but it was usually the point and click and pray that the photo will turn out somewhat they way I wanted it to when and if I ever got the film developed. I didn't have patients to look for what I thought was the best angle, was the lighting good or poor or what I knew that my photo editing programs was capable of doing to help enhance the shot. I find that my photographs turn out the way that I want when I'm relaxed, enjoying what I'm doing or where I'm at and can see the end results before I even take the picture. Understanding what you are photographing and having the patients and understand that it is probably going to take more than just a couple of shots before the right one is captured.
