Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taking on a farm near Worcester in the western cape, on a very unplanned misty winters morning.

Time

I remember the day like it was yesterday, because i got lost ,the gps wouldnt pick up because on that side of worcester the closer you get to the farm you lose any cellphone reception. They had to come and find me. So we drove out to this riverbed and it was all misty bud just at that spot sun would filter through the mist ,giving it that glow. It was around 8 o'clock in the morning.

Lighting

I have recently started playing around with natural light photography, it is tricky but so rewarding, so i am still in that puppy-fase and as i learned mist looks great in some photos, but it has its hassles, in some photos my couple became washed out, which meant more editing time and when the sun did come out it was overly sharp, so i used it to my advantage, moved them to the shade or used the sun for some sunflared shots or that halo-effect.

Equipment

I used an old sony alpha DSLR- A100 and a 200mm lense, and i few props. Nothing else was use.

Inspiration

I was a studio photographer for a few years and you use the same routine for almost all shoots, but when i started natural light i had to play around more, be more creative. I started looking at other photographers styles and how they went about, and in that process decided to get 3 new style poses for every shoot. When i saw this specific shot i knew it would be perfect for this fun-loving couple, they truely made it their own after just a few pointers.

Editing

Yes, i shoot in raw, which helps alot, and because the sun was almost completely blocked by the mist , the photo came out a bit blue and because of the effect mist has, it muted almost "bleached" the color. I turned up vibrance and added a bit of warmth.voila

In my camera bag

Well at present i only have my Sony alpha DSLR A100 and the 200mm lense. My previous equipment got stolen, but if you truely have the guts of a photographer you will be able to Mcgyver almost anything.

Feedback

Go early in the mornig "golden hour" it truely makes a difference and what totally helps me out with couples, is getting to know them before hand, because if they are comfortable it will show. It also helps for getting the right enviroment/location for the shoot.Be patient, your first shot might not work out, move on, change location. And dont worry about getting dirty, i was standing barefeet in icecold water taking this photo. And before you freak out because of unplanned weather changes, look around, see what you can work with, you might just be surprised! And that shot you planned might just come out alot better.
