Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my living room as I didn’t have a studio or spare room at the time.

Time

I honestly can’t recall the time of day, if I’d have to guess I’d say probably afternoon to early evening.

Lighting

Lighting was a little tricky as my living room at the time was dark & dreary and had wood panel walls that always gave off a horrible yellow cast. I didn’t have any decent lighting equipment then other than one flash unit. So I used a lamp that I had her mom hold up to aim at her face as a main light source along with my flash facing upward and bouncing off a white card to help for fill! I honestly was experimenting with both the lighting & lenses for practice when we decided to do this creative shoot. I wanted to see what I could create with what little equipment I had!

Equipment

My camera at the time was a Nikon D7000. I was experimenting with various lens baby lenses and accessories to see what effects I can get. My flash unit was a simple Nikon sb9000 flash unit and I used a basic house lamp for added light (granted I had the mom hold it to aim the light on the child’s face cause my living room was so dark). Amazingly the two worked out well enough.

Inspiration

The entire shoot was planned with a friends daughter just for experimenting and trying new and different things. I wanted to try out a new flash at the time and also my lens baby lenses that where new at the time too, and she was just happy to play model for me and dress up in tulle skirts with flowers in her hair!

Editing

I do always post process my images for the most part. For this one it was to convert to black & white and just some tweaking to adjust levels, highlights & shadows, sharpness (what I consider to be basic processing to clean an image up). I do believe I ran one of my actions in photoshop on this image to give it more of a silver film tone look!

In my camera bag

Back then it was always my camera body and at least 3 lenses, (my 50mm, 85mm & 35mm primes have always been my faves), sometimes my flash unit, lens cleaners, tissues, hair pins, a bottle of water & snacks. But honestly now that I have a dedicated studio space, my equipment has outgrown my bags. I no longer shoot anywhere else but my studio, so it’s nice not having to worry of what to take and what to leave behind.

Feedback

Always experiment and play and don’t feel like you have to spend a lot of money on expensive equipment to create a beautiful shot! I used a cheap house hold lamp for lighting in a horribly lit dark & dreary living room! I made a backdrop out of coffee filters from a dollar store! I used to think if I had good equipment I’d be better, but the truth is, it’s not the gear at all! It’s me! I just need to practice more and think out of the box! So do the same! Practice, play, experiment and think out of the box!
