Location
This photo was taken in the portrait park that surround our home and studio.Time
The image was captured in late afternoon in open shade.Lighting
I was using a Dynalite Uni400jr strobe and a starfish modifier reflector, along with the natural fill light of open shade outdoors.Equipment
The camera used for this photo was Canon 5D Mark lll, the lens was an older Canon 35-350mm L lens and photographing hand held f6 at 1/160th and ISO 400. I was using a Dynalite Uni400jr strobe and a starfish modifier. Reflector was used for fill.Inspiration
I was working with a model, actress and belly dancer out of California on promotional material for Instagram, so I had fabricated several sets outdoors around our portrait park. She had several elaborate costumes and this mask, so we incorporated it into some our shots. Out of that eventually came this image.Editing
There was a great deal of post processing in this image first to create the rather surreal background and surroundings and then to perfect it to the agent and dancer's specifications. In my camera bag
I normally photograph with my Canon 5D Mark lll, but use Canon 5D Mark l for backup and second camera. Typically I will use the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8l ef is ii, my trusty Canon 35-350mm L or my Canon 35-105mm. Sandisk, 4,8,16, 32GB compact flash cards are used, I have several speedlights, but prefer the 430EX model, and Monfrotto tripod for support.Feedback
When trying to capture this type of an image outdoors, it particularly useful to have even lighting like the open shade in which I photographed this image and then use lights or reflectors to modify it. I did have a brightly lit roof in the sky area of the background. That was handled in the post editing with the moon and the clouds. Details are always important, the more things you can get right in the camera the less you have to try and do in photoshop. The set was another important feature that lent itself well in developing this image. Perhaps of most importance are photographic skills and a good model or subject that can project a great image.
