Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shoot at Descanso Gardens in La Canada Flintridge California. Descanso Gardens is a Beautiful Botanical Garden, with all types of flowers, and plants. Spring Time is the best time to go there. I like to shoot butterflies and humming birds and this is a good time of year to find them. I also am a self taught photographer and I have been doing this for at least twenty years. I used my Nikon D300 which I think is one of the best camera's that

Time

I always like early morning, but you can see butterflies and hummingbirds all times of the day. I like morning times better because the light is nice and warm.

Lighting

For me, either morning or afternoon light is better. I don't like noon because there are no shadows. Shadows always add to a nature photo.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D300 camera with a 80-300mm Nikor zoom lens, I like zoom lenses because you don't have to get to close to animals and insects and scare them away. Birds are the same. A powerful zoom lense is great because you can shoot from a distance and not disturb your subject.

Inspiration

Getting a great shot of a butterfly or a humming bird is a real challange. I like challanges, the hard part is finding what you want to shoot.

Editing

I use Lightroom and Photoshop. First I use Lightroom and then I finish with Photoshop. I use some Topaz filters for noise and effects. My favorite Topaz filter is Topaz Clairity and Topaz Noise 6.

In my camera bag

I have two cameras. A Nikon D300 and A Nikon D610. I have a variety of lenses for different shoots, because I do nature Photography. I also like to do Macro photography. Usually have my Nikon D610 which is a full frame sensor camera. My standard lens is a Nikor 70mm to 300mm. I use my Nikor 80mm to 400mm quite often for wild life. For landscapes and seascapes I use a Sigma 12-24mm Ultra wide angle. I also have a Tamron 70 to 300mm 2.8 Apature lens for low light shots. I use the Lee filter system for Seascapes and long exposure photography. I use Monfrotto Tripods.

Feedback

You would be suprised on how well a Zoom lens works for Macro Photography. I had a expensive macro lens and I sold it . Now all I use is my zoom lenses. Try it! You just might like it. With Macro lenses you have to get very close to your subject and this is hard to do with out scaring your subject away.
