Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken during my first visit to Old Town, Alexandria, VA. It is a view of the Potomac River out in front of the historic Torpedo Factory, once a WW II factory and now a housing of art galleries and studios.

Time

This was a rainy morning around 10 am. It just just kept lightly sprinkling and misting all morning.

Lighting

The main draw is the sun glowing through the clouds with a small bird flying by, but I also love the rich texture and reflectivity of the wood planks in the dock.

Equipment

This was handheld with a Nikon D90 and a Nikon 18-200 mm VRII lens.

Inspiration

Sometimes inspiration for a photo like this is simply capturing a place that I imagine seeing myself in enjoying the moment. Also, due to the rain, not many people were around and it felt almost deserted where it is normally supposed to be quite active.

Editing

I use shoot raw and process in Lightroom. I usually prefer to work in color, but this photo felt like it needed to be processed in b&w to convey the solitary aspect that I felt shooting it.

In my camera bag

These days it's a Nikon D7100 with an 18-300 mm VRII lens. I also use a Sigma 1.4 50 mm for beautiful bokeh, and a Tokina 2.8 11-16 mm for astrophotography.

Feedback

I think lighting and texture gave this shot a lot of appeal for me, but capturing it in the rain is what made it special. If you haven't tried processing in b&w before, it's worth keeping in mind for those certain shots that have a classic feeling to them. Using a program like Lightroom lets you make virtual copies so that you can experiment without affecting the main image. And if you can, learn to shoot and process raw - it's made a world of difference in the quality of my images.
