Behind The Lens
Location
This is Mogshade Pond in the New Forest, UK. Mogshade means, according to old dictionaries, "The shadow of trees". The trees at the back of the pond cast a magnificent reflection.Time
The time is 5:21. The date is May 14th. A great time to be in this location as the wildlife of the New Forest are also up and about. I've encountered deer, ponies, horses and even an Egret by the pond.Lighting
The early dawn provided the only lighting.Equipment
I used a Canon EOS 7D MKII with a Tokina 11 - 16mm lens. The aperture was f/11 and the exposure 1/4s at ISO 100. A tripod is necessary as the lens has no image stabilisation.Inspiration
I wanted the golden light of dawn and the early morning reds on the clouds.Editing
I always shoot in RAW so there is always post-processing to be done. I used Camera Raw. In Photoshop I clicked on channels, ctrl-click the RGB, then ctrl-j to create a new layer. Change that layer to overlay and see the image pop !In my camera bag
Spare batteries, always charged ! Spare memory cards, a lens blower and a microfibre cloth.Feedback
I always check the weather forecast first. Then I use TPE (The Photographer's Ephemeris) to check the sunrise direction. The words I want to see in the forecast are partially cloudy. Then there's a good chance of something beautiful, but be patient - it doesn't always happen !
