Behind The Lens
Location
Outside of Blanco, Texas on the Blanco River. A small little dam gave me the opportunity to get into the middle of the river and choose that low point, in order to get the reflection of the cloud.Time
Funny, I couldn't really remember the time - late morning, early afternoon is my guess, as there are almost no shadows visible. I loaded the picture to see if I'm right, it was shot ten to noon on 11/30/2014. Fall in Texas or at least in the more southern parts of Texas normally last well into December with the colors and it's beauty.Lighting
Not really that much to share - f/8 1/250 - I probably could have closed the f-stop a bit more, but I really didn't wanted to have the full depth of field in the picture. ISO was set at 100.Equipment
This one was shot with Nikon D7000, handheld, no flash with an lens setting at 18mm to get the whole scene into the picture.Inspiration
I think everything just lined up right - from the scenery, to the light, to the composition. Normally my camera is always with me. I rather trash something at home then not being able to shoot. I guess I'm a nerd that way a bit - I always walk around and see pictures, or when I'm a passenger in a car, I always make mental notes about places I need to go back and shoot, if there is no time to stop.Editing
Yes I did - and actually looking at it - I may have to re-edit the picture. The edit was done with the free Google Picasa editor, a good editor to start with, but with some real limitations. I'm now using PS, LR and edit almost all my pictures in RAW format. In my camera bag
Besides my D7000, I use my wife's D3300 as well - so I may have two cameras with two different lenses ready. I also occasionally shoot with my smart phone, even though the camera is quite lousy. But it's good enough for some of the Instagram shots I publish.Feedback
I guess the best tip I can give is to always have your eyes open. Look around you, frame in your mind, come up with ideas. Also be patient, explore different angles, compositions. This shot was chosen from a list of maybe a dozen shots - the rest was trashed. I shot this way analog, now with digital is much cheaper. Another good tip is to prepare yourself if you go on a photoshoot, make yourself familiar with the surroundings, google maps and stories. The more you know, the more secure you are. The more secure you are, the more time and passion you can put into your photography. And then it's not just a snapshot.
