Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at the model house using collapsible backdrop as a background

Time

We started shooting around 1pm and it took about 1+ to finish entire photoshoot

Lighting

For the lighting I used 2 speedlights with the remote plus the day light for ambient lighting from the window. Main light was a speed light with 60cm soft box right above the table.

Equipment

Camera Nikon D810, 18-35mm sigma art series lens without the crop mode, for flash I used 2 Neewer speedlights with the remote triggers by Yongnuo

Inspiration

I love cinematic and moody style portraits. For such artistic portrait work I like to tell the story in one shot. Most of my cinematic portrait work is driven by some kind of a back story.

Editing

For post processing I mainly worked on color and lighting. When I shoot my work I have exact visualization of how final photograph is going to look. Because most of the times I work on the go, I don't always have access to fancy lighting equipment, and in many cases I do re-lighting in post, like in this particular photo.

In my camera bag

It depends what I shoot. I mainly focus on Fashion, Portrait and Swimwear. For casual fashion work I shoot mostly with natural light. I use Nikon D810, Nikon 85mm 1.8 lens and spare batteries. When I shoot swimwear sometimes I also take collapsible reflector with me. For cinematic portrait work I pack full bag. On top of camera and lenses 85mm and sigma 18-35 which are my go to lenses, I have remote triggers, 2 speed lights, cleaning stuff and lots of spare batteries for camera, flash and remote triggers. But in general I try to take as less equipment as possible, because I like to be mobile.

Feedback

Advice for someone who is trying to achieve similar photograph is to be unique. Get inspired by others, but don't copy their work. When I think of a creative project, I start by getting the sketch idea of what I want to photograph. I am trying to tell the story in my cinematic portraits. I always look at other photographers work to get inspired. To me it is very important to get inspiration and create something different. I don't like looking at the other photographers work before my photoshoots, because I feel like I am becoming to conditioned to what I just seen and I am no longer in control of my own creative process. Learn how to use Photoshop and know how far you can push your camera (highlights and shadows). It will benefit you in the difficult lighting situations.
