Location
Hanging out of a window several stories up in a Chacago hotel. Not my smartest decision but i'm glad i did!Time
Afternoon, around 2pm.Lighting
The buildings are high in Chicago so the scene below was in shade which offered a nice flat, even light.Equipment
Canon G9 and a strap. Photoshop cs5.Inspiration
I always like to see what my view is whenever i stay in a hotel, i can't really remember which floor i was on but it was many stories up, i had to stretch good and proper to see over the edge out my window, when i saw the taxi's flying by with the road stripes and couldn't help myself.Editing
Yes, there was a van parked and people walking on the sidewalk in the original shot. They distracted my eye so i chopped them out. All i wanted in the shot was the road and a single taxi to keep the homogeneity. I have a personal battle with editing (how much is too much?) but at the same time think why not do what i like. Photoshop lets us do endless amounts of editing to images, i don't like fabricating multiple images to look like a single scene, unless i'm deliberately creating a fantasy scene or a montage but will happily chop and crop until i think it's right. When i cropped this image i knew it was right, there was suddenly a serenity visually (must be the symmetry). The biggest problem i had was how thick to make the black borders (i still think they're too chunky). In my camera bag
My G9 has broken, I now use a Sony a7 with a Leica 28mm f2, Sony 55 -210mm, f4.5-6.3 and Sony 28 - 70mm f3.5-5.6Feedback
Errr, don't be as stupid as me and hang yourself out of a window. To be honest i'm sure there are people who could capture a shot like this better (with less crop involved). Just strap yourself to something secure before leaning out, make sure you're strap is also secured to your camera and personage, you don't want to be dropping that.
